Don't send fire trucks to all calls. In 2007, only 6% of emergency calls to fire departments nationwide were actual fires. Fire departments could be a little smarter about when they sound out the whole fire truck and crew. All employees should be cut the same regarding salaries and benefits. There are employees whether blue or white collar doing more then one job. Fairness and teamwork during this time counts for a lot. So far the Police and FF's are not team players, thanks partially to the City Council. Don't penalize just higher paid employees either which is what the Council will probably propose, they are part of the economy also.
